Croft diversification or producing your own food

Croft diversification, or growing your own produce, has become increasingly popular, particularly since the pandemic and other issues relating to fresh food imports. Many people are growing more of their own food and appreciate the calming and rewarding activity this can be. However, as many of us have experienced, crops can easily be damaged by incliment weather and sea spray, ruining months of hard work. Polytunnels are an option in the more sheltered areas but once damaged, are easily destroyed.

This is where the crub type build comes in, with several companies offering quite similar products. The sheeting is near identical, treated timber too. Since 2019, we have offered the choice of recycled plastic posts, thus increasing the guaranteed length of service the structure has. According to engineering principles, without this, the maximum guarantee can only be ten years. Plenty long enough for most, but not everyone, which is why we offer this option for peace of mind.

Shed or warm garage

You don’t have to grow plants. A light warm garage or workspace with a solid floor is another option. Working with plenty of light and using Opyl sheeting, so it doesn’t get too warm, provides a useful and more comfortable workspace than many dark stone garages.

Tight space – No problem

Not everyone has a field. We have built Hebcrubs in some tight spaces, using every avialable sqaure meter of space, often building up ground and working around trees. We carry out groundworks and work on complex sites, not just easy installations.

Standard 9.6M Hebcrub

A standard Hebcrub under construction. This size is the most popular choice, for many reasons. Not too long, so that airflow can become an issue in still weather or sheltered sites. Not so small as to make you wish you’d gone for a larger crub. Many people wish they’d gone larger. It is amazing how quickly a plant collection grows.

7.4 meter crub

The standard size is 9.6M. Not everyone needs a large Hebcrub. We can build to any size in increments of just over 1 meter. However, it is cost effective to go for the longest crub you can fit. This up to a point, as the longer crubs can get still air towards the centre. This can be detrimental to plants if you can’t ventilate. Thankfully, not often a problem in the West.

Croft diversification

Modern crofting often includes a diverse array of food and income sources.. For many, adding a Hebcrub to a diverse, modern croft, makes sense.

Hard ground, tight space, build

Not everyone has ample space. With groundworks experience in standard building practice, we are experienced in finding the best way to construct a Hebcrub, even in the most difficult of locations.
